"I realized that I was being an ass to you," I confess. “And to be frank, the picture that Tony drew of you being so terrible, was it tracking with the person that I was seeing. The person that helped Andrew with such kindness and patience.”

"Well, that's a step in the right direction at least."

I take it that she's talking about my behavior. Clearing my throat, I suck in a deep breath.

She pinches her eyes, wiping away the last of the tear residue. She gently tucks a stray few strands of hair behind her ear and runs her tongue over her bottom lip. She stops picking at her jeans and stares at me for a few moments before staring out the window again.

"Andrew said you told him a story…" I trail off. I don’t know how to get the truth from her. I’m in new territory here. Using Andrew's name to strike a conversation seems lame, but it's the only thing that we both seem to have in common. A soft smile instantly changes her face from the blocky tenseness that I’ve been looking at for the last 20 minutes as if the sun had broken through the sky and onto her features.

It's such breathtaking beauty, this small smile has created. Her features instantly become so beautiful. As if, in that moment, the world had been waiting to catch a glimpse of that face, those beautiful green eyes, framed by that lovely Auburn hair. My breath catches in my chest for just a moment. I truly don't understand how I could have ever thought of her as a skinny little girl or anything less than this stunning woman before me.

"It was a silly story which I told him to keep his mind out of what was going on," she responds.

"He didn't think that it was silly. I don't think that the story was meant to be silly."

She splays her fingers across her lap, takes a breath, makes a little sigh, and looks directly into his eyes.

"What do you want, Michael? Just yesterday, you Acted as if I was the vilest woman you had ever met. Now, we are sitting across the table in a coffee shop, having a conversation that I'm certain neither of us has any interest in. So, why the sudden change?"

I hate how she stares at me. I don't hate it. I hate how her stares make me feel. They unnerve me and make it seem like boring into my soul. They are usually snappy, sassy, and full of fire but today, right now, they are soft, intens,e and filled with curiosity.

"There's no catch," I shrug. I need my coffee now. Why did I finish my coffee?

"Can I see pictures of Andrew when he was a child?" she asks suddenly, surprising me. I'm unable to hide the bewilderment I feel.

"Excuse me?"

"I would appreciate it if you could show me some pictures of Andrew when he was a baby or when he was little," she says with a kind of hitch in her voice.
